When someone is facing you, their backbone should be straight, and when they turn sideways, the spine should have curves. The spine is made up of 24 bones called your vertebrae, and between your bones are your discs, which cushion the spine. These are the joints that allow your spine to move.
When we look at the vertebral column from the side, we have two bones and a disc. There’s a hole in this region and a nerve that comes out of the spine. The nerve doesn’t stop there though, as nerves branch off like a tree and go out to every part of the body.
Why Having a Healthy Nervous System Is Vital
The 50 trillion cells in your body have a direct connection to your nervous system through those nerves. On the other end of the nerve on the inside of the spine is your spinal cord protected by your spine. Your spinal cord runs up to your brain, which is the master controller of the body.
Everything that happens in your body occurs because your brain sends messages down your spinal cord through the nerves to every cell of your body. Then your body transmits messages back up the nerves into the spinal cord up to the brain. There’s this constant communication happening every second of your life.
Movements, thoughts, heart beating, lungs breathing, your immune system and digestive system. The brain even tells every cell of your body when it’s supposed to die, which is called apoptosis.
What can happen is that we can have a spinal injury that can be something big, like a car accident or sports injury, or something small, like repetitive motion or sitting at a desk incorrectly for 8-10 hours a day. You may not even know what caused the injury. That’s why chiropractic care is vitally important.
Experience More Abundant Health
The big picture idea is that we’re correcting the function of your nervous system, getting nerves to function better so your body performs optimally. As people get past their acute care or relief care and continue to maintain or wellness care, they can enjoy optimal health and have more life in their body. That’s the big idea that chiropractic was founded upon!
